🚨 2005 Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI W211: Emergency Neutral

The W211 E-Class uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a P-R-N-D gate and electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the key to position 2 (ignition ON) to power the shifter interlock system.
  3. If the shifter will not release from Park due to a failed brake-light switch, locate the shift lock override.
  4. Look at the console trim to the left of the shifter base—there is a small rectangular or square cap/cover.
  5. Pry off the small cap carefully with a flat tool or your fingernail to expose the override slot.
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, press the shifter button (on top of the shifter handle) and move the shifter rearward through R to N.
  8. Release the override and verify the shifter is in Neutral position.
  9. The vehicle can now be rolled or pushed; for towing, consult the owner's manual for maximum distance and speed with rear wheels on the ground.

With zero electrical power
The W211 shift interlock requires some electrical power to release. With a completely dead battery, turn the key to position 2 (ON)—if there is insufficient power to energize the interlock solenoid, the override slot may still not release the shifter. In this case, you must jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source to the battery (located in the engine bay on the right side) to provide minimal power to the shifter system. Once minimal power is restored, use the override procedure. If no power can be restored, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed.
