🚨 2008 Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI W211: Emergency Neutral

The W211 E-Class uses a traditional center-console floor-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (key partially forward) if battery has any residual power.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the shifter console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key firmly into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  6. If completely successful, leave in Neutral; if the transmission does not fully release, attempt to rock the vehicle slightly while applying override pressure.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift interlock remains engaged. The mechanical override slot is the only method to release the shifter. If the override does not work and the transmission will not release, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with dollies or dragged onto the bed—do not attempt to force the shifter.
