🚨 1992 Mercedes-Benz E320 W124: Emergency Neutral

The W124 E-Class uses a center-console floor-mounted automatic transmission lever with a mechanical shift interlock tied to the brake pedal and ignition key.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Insert the key into the ignition and turn to position 1 or 2 if any battery power remains—this may allow the mechanical interlock to disengage with brake pedal pressure.
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly and attempt to move the shifter to Neutral while pressing the shifter release button.
  4. If the shifter will not move and there is no electrical power, look for the shift lock override access—on W124 models, this is typically a small slot or removable trim piece near the base of the shifter on the driver's side.
  5. Remove any plastic cover or trim piece to access the override mechanism.
  6. Insert a flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override and push or pry as needed while pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral.
  7. If the mechanical linkage is completely stuck, the vehicle may need to be loaded onto a flatbed with the rear wheels on dollies.
Shift-lock override location
Override access is generally near the base of the shifter on the driver's side; exact location varies slightly by year, but typically under a small trim cap or accessible through a slot in the shifter surround.
With zero electrical power
The W124 shift interlock is partially mechanical and partially electrical. With no power, the mechanical override should still function. If the override mechanism is inaccessible or non-functional, flatbed loading with dollies is required.
