🚨 2025 Mercedes-Benz E350 Diesel W213: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 W213 E-Class uses a column-mounted electronic shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if possible.
  2. If battery power is available, turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is on the underside of the shifter stalk assembly near the column attachment point, covered by a small rubber cap.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the rubber cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press firmly while attempting to move the shifter to N (neutral, down one position from P).
  6. If successful, the transmission will shift to neutral and the vehicle can roll.
  7. If the shifter remains locked with no power, proceed to the manual release procedure below.

With zero electrical power
With complete electrical failure, the electronic shifter may not release. In this case, access the transmission from underneath: raise the vehicle safely, locate the transmission gear selector lever on the driver's side of the transmission housing, and manually move it to the neutral position (typically middle position). This requires professional equipment. For flatbed loading with no power, the vehicle must be winched onto the flatbed with all wheels locked—do NOT attempt to push or tow with wheels on the ground.
