⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 or 2 (one or two clicks clockwise) to energize the shift interlock solenoid.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the release button on the front of the shift lever and move the lever from Park through Reverse to Neutral.
- If the shift interlock is preventing movement (failed brake light switch or no electrical power): locate the shift lock override slot on the center console near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular or square cap on the console to the right or forward-right of the shifter.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override access cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, you may turn off the ignition; the transmission will stay in Neutral and the vehicle can roll.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap on the center console to the right or forward-right of the shifter base; press down in the slot beneath to mechanically release the shift lock.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, turn the key to position 1 or 2 if possible (this may allow enough residual power for the shift lock). If there is absolutely zero power or the interlock still won't release, use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the small cap near the shifter, insert a tool into the slot, press down, then press the shifter button and move to Neutral. The W210's shift linkage is cable-operated and mechanical, so once the lock is released, the transmission will shift normally.
