🚨 2000 Mercedes-Benz E430 W210: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 W210 E430 uses a traditional console-mounted PRND selector lever with a mechanical shift lock and cable-operated transmission linkage.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 or 2 (one or two clicks clockwise) to energize the shift interlock solenoid.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the release button on the front of the shift lever and move the lever from Park through Reverse to Neutral.
  5. If the shift interlock is preventing movement (failed brake light switch or no electrical power): locate the shift lock override slot on the center console near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular or square cap on the console to the right or forward-right of the shifter.
  6. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override access cap.
  7. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  8. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button and move the lever to Neutral.
  9. Once in Neutral, you may turn off the ignition; the transmission will stay in Neutral and the vehicle can roll.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap on the center console to the right or forward-right of the shifter base; press down in the slot beneath to mechanically release the shift lock.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, turn the key to position 1 or 2 if possible (this may allow enough residual power for the shift lock). If there is absolutely zero power or the interlock still won't release, use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the small cap near the shifter, insert a tool into the slot, press down, then press the shifter button and move to Neutral. The W210's shift linkage is cable-operated and mechanical, so once the lock is released, the transmission will shift normally.
