🚨 2002 Mercedes-Benz E430 W210: Emergency Neutral

The W210 E430 uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the column shroud, near the base of the shift lever
  4. Remove the small rectangular plastic cover by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade into the override slot
  6. Press firmly inward on the override release while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
  7. If successful, the shifter will move freely to N without pressing the brake pedal
  8. Keep the override pressed until the lever is fully in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the column shifter interlock may be difficult to override mechanically. If the override slot does not release the shifter, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery minimally (just enough to power the shifter solenoid) or disconnect the shift interlock solenoid connector directly. The solenoid is accessed by removing the lower column shroud - disconnect the electrical connector to the interlock solenoid to mechanically release it.
