🚨 1992 Mercedes-Benz E500 W124: Emergency Neutral

The W124 E500 uses a traditional column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift interlock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is secure with parking brake applied and wheels chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position I (ACC) or II (ON) if possible—this provides power to release the shift interlock solenoid.
  3. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
  4. Press the small rectangular button on the side of the column shifter handle and move the shifter down to Neutral.
  5. If the shifter will not move due to failed brake-light switch or shift interlock, locate the shift lock override access.
Shift-lock override location
On early 1992 W124 models, the shift lock override may require accessing the interlock mechanism at the base of the steering column. Look for a small access hole or slot near where the shifter stalk enters the column housing. Some models have a mechanical override that can be accessed with a small screwdriver inserted near the shifter button mechanism.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery and ignition off: (1) Try manually pushing the shifter button and moving to Neutral with force—the mechanical linkage may still work on some 1992 models. (2) If that fails, access the shift interlock solenoid at the column base (may require removing lower dash trim) and manually release the lock mechanism. (3) As last resort for dead battery with failed interlock: jump-start the 12V system just enough to power the interlock solenoid, shift to Neutral, then disconnect. The W124 mechanical linkage is relatively robust, but the interlock was added to meet regulations and can be mechanically overridden.
