🚨 1993 Mercedes-Benz E500 W124: Emergency Neutral

The 1993 W124 E500 has a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift interlock that requires brake pedal depression and ignition power.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake and ensure the vehicle is secure.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position I or II to provide power to the shift interlock system.
  3. Depress the brake pedal fully.
  4. Press the button on the side of the column shifter stalk and move down to Neutral.
  5. If the shifter is locked and won't move despite brake pedal pressed, you need to use the shift lock override.
Shift-lock override location
The shift lock override access is typically near the base of the column shifter where it enters the steering column housing. Look for a small rubber plug or access hole on the underside or side of the column shroud. Insert a small screwdriver or the key blade to manually release the interlock mechanism.
With zero electrical power
Without battery power, the electronic shift interlock solenoid will not release. First attempt: Try forcing the shifter button and moving to Neutral—sometimes the mechanical linkage will override the electronic lock with enough force (not recommended but may work in emergency). Better method: Access the shift interlock solenoid near the column base (may require removing lower steering column trim panels). You can manually push the solenoid plunger to release the lock mechanism. Alternatively, jump the battery temporarily, shift to Neutral, then disconnect. The W124 is relatively straightforward mechanically compared to modern vehicles.
