🚨 2003 Mercedes-Benz E500 W211: Emergency Neutral

The early W211 E500 uses an electronic column-mounted shifter lever with both electronic and mechanical shift lock override capabilities.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is applied and wheels are chocked.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition key to position 2 (ON) - if battery has any charge, the electronic shift lock may release when you press the brake pedal.
  3. If no power or electronic release doesn't work, locate the shift lock override: remove the small rectangular plastic cover on the right side of the column shroud, just below and behind where the shifter lever enters the column.
  4. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press inward while simultaneously moving the shifter lever toward you to Neutral position.
  5. The override requires firm pressure - you are mechanically releasing a solenoid-actuated lock pin.
  6. Once in Neutral, release the parking brake and the vehicle can be moved.
  7. If the vehicle must be towed more than a short distance, use a flatbed or dolly with rear wheels off the ground to avoid transmission damage.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override is your only option. The steering wheel will remain locked, making towing difficult. If possible, use a jump pack to provide enough power to turn the key to position 1, which unlocks the steering. The shift lock override itself is mechanical and works without power.
