⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is applied and wheels are chocked.
- Attempt to turn the ignition key to position 2 (ON) - if battery has any charge, press the brake pedal to release the electronic shift lock.
- If no power or electronic release fails, locate the shift lock override cover on the right side of the column shroud, below where the shifter lever enters the column.
- Pry off or slide open the small rectangular plastic cover to expose the override slot.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the slot and press firmly inward.
- While holding the override tool pressed in, move the shifter lever toward you into Neutral position.
- The shifter should move with moderate resistance as you mechanically override the lock solenoid.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched. For towing distances beyond immediate movement, use a flatbed or ensure rear wheels are off the ground.

With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, use the mechanical override procedure above. The steering lock will remain engaged unless you can get the key to position 1 - this may require a jump pack or trickle charger for a few minutes to provide minimal voltage. The shift override itself is purely mechanical and requires no electrical power.
