🚨 2005 Mercedes-Benz E500 W211: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 W211 E500 features an electronic column-mounted shifter lever with electronic shift interlock and mechanical override release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake firmly and ensure wheels are chocked.
  2. If battery has any charge, turn ignition to position 2 (ON) and press the brake pedal - the shift lock may release electronically.
  3. For dead battery or failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override on the right side of the column shroud.
  4. Remove the small rectangular plastic cover directly below where the shifter lever enters the column housing.
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot.
  6. Press the tool inward firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter lever toward you into Neutral.
  7. You should feel the mechanical lock release with moderate resistance.
  8. Once in Neutral, vehicle can be moved. For towing, use a flatbed or dolly with rear wheels elevated to prevent transmission damage.

With zero electrical power
The mechanical override works without any electrical power. However, the steering lock will remain engaged with zero power, making towing very difficult. If possible, use a portable jump starter to provide just enough voltage to turn the key to position 1 (ACC), which releases the steering lock. The shift override requires no power.
