🚨 2006 Mercedes-Benz E500 W211: Emergency Neutral
The 2006 W211 E500 uses an electronic column-mounted shifter lever with shift interlock solenoid and mechanical override.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply parking brake and chock wheels securely.
- If battery has residual charge, turn key to position 2 (ON) and depress brake pedal - electronic shift lock should release normally.
- If power is unavailable or brake switch has failed, locate the shift lock override access point.
- On the right side of the column shroud, below the shifter lever, find and remove the small rectangular plastic cover.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot beneath the cover.
- Push the tool inward firmly (you are compressing a spring-loaded mechanical release).
- While holding the override depressed, pull the shifter lever toward you into Neutral position.
- Release the override tool and verify the shifter remains in Neutral.
- Vehicle can now be moved onto a flatbed or towed with rear wheels off the ground only.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override procedure above will work without electrical power. Be aware that the steering wheel will remain locked, which severely limits maneuverability. If you have access to a jump pack or booster, apply power just long enough to turn the key to position 1 to unlock steering - this makes loading onto a flatbed much easier. The shift release itself is mechanical.
