🚨 2009 Mercedes-Benz E550 W211: Emergency Neutral

The W211 E550 uses a traditional PRND console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 (accessories) or position 2 (ignition on) if battery power permits—this may allow normal shifting if only the brake switch has failed.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable plastic cap, positioned directly forward of the shifter base on the console (toward the front of the car).
  4. Use a flat-head screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the key blade or a small flat-head screwdriver fully into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
  7. Release the override tool and replace the cap.
  8. The vehicle can now be moved or towed; re-engage Park once positioned, or follow flatbed procedures.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the ignition cannot be turned and the steering lock will engage. The shift-lock override still functions mechanically—complete steps 3-6 above. You will need to manually unlock the steering by turning the key while applying light steering pressure. For towing with no power, the vehicle MUST be on a flatbed or with front wheels raised, as the steering lock cannot be defeated without battery voltage and forced steering will damage the lock mechanism.
