🚨 2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 W212: Emergency Neutral
The W212 E550 uses a console-mounted electronic selector lever (Direct Select) that returns to center position after each selection, with electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly if possible.
- If battery has some charge, insert key and press the Start/Stop button without pressing the brake pedal to get accessory mode or ignition-on mode; this may allow normal gear selection if only the brake switch has failed.
- Locate the shift lock override access: on the W212, look for a small removable cover panel on the console trim directly adjacent to the shifter assembly—typically on the right side or forward of the shifter base.
- Remove the small cover panel using a flat-head screwdriver or trim tool.
- Behind the panel, you will find a yellow or white plastic tab or lever; this is the mechanical shift-lock release.
- Pull or push the release tab (usually pull upward or toward you) while simultaneously moving the shift lever from P through the gate toward N.
- The shifter should release and allow movement into Neutral; keep the release actuated until the shifter is fully in N.
- Replace the cover panel.
- The vehicle can now be moved or towed; for flatbed towing, follow normal procedures.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the ignition cannot be activated and the electronic steering lock will engage. The mechanical shift-lock override (steps 3-7) still works to release the transmission into Neutral. However, the steering lock CANNOT be mechanically overridden on W212 models without battery power—attempting to force it will damage the lock module. The vehicle MUST be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels OFF the ground. Do NOT attempt to tow with front wheels down when battery is dead.
