🚨 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQB: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 EQB uses a small column-mounted electronic shift stalk (lever-style) on the right side of the steering column, similar to other modern Mercedes models.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if it engages (may not function with dead 12V battery)
  2. Locate the 12V battery in the engine compartment and connect a jump starter or booster pack to restore minimal electrical power
  3. With 12V power restored, press the brake pedal firmly
  4. Push the shift stalk down briefly to engage Drive, then while holding the brake, locate the shift lock override
  5. If power cannot be restored, locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover on the center console near the cupholders or under a small cap in the console area
  6. Use a flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the override cover
  7. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while attempting to move the shift stalk to Neutral
  8. If the electronic parking brake cannot be released, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground
Shift-lock override location
In the center console area near the cupholders, typically under a small rectangular cover; exact location may vary and requires inspection of the specific console layout
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function normally. The shift lock override may allow physical neutral engagement, but the electronic parking brake (EPB) will remain engaged and cannot be released without power. Jump starting the 12V battery is strongly recommended. If this is not possible, flatbed towing with all wheels off the ground is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The EQB is a full electric vehicle. NEVER tow with any wheels on the ground - the electric drive motors will generate electricity and can cause severe damage to the drivetrain. Always use a flatbed or trailer with all four wheels off the ground. There is no mechanical 'tow mode' available without 12V power to release the electronic parking brake.
