🚨 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQC: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 EQC uses a column-mounted electronic gear selector stalk (similar to traditional Mercedes design) located on the right side of the steering column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake manually if possible
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (press Start button without brake pedal)
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot on the center console near the cupholders - it is a small rectangular slot covered by a removable cap
  4. Remove the rubber cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while moving the column stalk to Neutral position
  7. If successful, the vehicle will display 'N' on the instrument cluster (if power available)
  8. Release the override tool and verify the vehicle can roll freely
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot with rubber cap on center console area near cupholders; exact position may vary but typically forward of the cupholder assembly
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic gear selector will not function at all. You must jump-start the 12V battery (located in cargo area under floor panel) to get minimum power for the shift-lock override to work. The high-voltage EV battery does not help with this - only the 12V system controls the shifter electronics.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL EV WARNING: The EQC must be transported on a flatbed ONLY with all wheels off the ground. Do NOT tow with any wheels touching the road - the electric motors create resistance even in neutral and will generate unwanted voltage that can damage the drive system. Mercedes specifically prohibits dolly towing or flat towing this vehicle. If attempting to roll onto a flatbed, only move the vehicle the minimum distance necessary.
