🚨 2005 Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 G-Class uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with mechanical cable linkage to the 5-speed automatic transmission.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Locate the shift-lock override access near the shifter—look for a small covered slot or access point on the console immediately surrounding the shifter base, typically on the right side or front edge.
  3. Remove the small cover cap (may require prying with a flat-head screwdriver or simply pulling it off).
  4. Insert a small flat-head screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the override slot.
  5. Press down or push forward (depending on the mechanism design) on the override while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal if any residual power exists and moving the shifter from P to N.
  6. If there is absolutely no electrical power, the override should still mechanically release the park lock—apply firm pressure to the override while pulling the shifter toward N.
  7. Once in N, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
  8. For towing, the G-Class with part-time 4WD can potentially be flat-towed in 2WD mode with transfer case in neutral and front hubs unlocked (if manual hubs), but safest practice is flatbed transport; confirm your specific 4WD system configuration before attempting any towing with wheels down.

With zero electrical power
The 2005 G-Class has a more mechanical shifter system, so the override should function even with zero electrical power. Apply firm steady pressure to the override mechanism while moving the shifter. The park pawl release is mechanical and does not require battery power to operate.
