⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if the battery has sufficient charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot with a cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base on the center console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small cover cap
- Insert the key or screwdriver fully into the override slot
- While pressing down firmly on the override, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter still won't move, continue holding the override down and apply more force to the shifter while ensuring the brake is depressed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: The mechanical shift lock override should still function. Turn the key to position 1 mechanically, use the override slot as described, and the shifter should release mechanically. The steering lock may remain engaged, making the vehicle difficult to steer - the steering wheel will need to be unlocked manually by turning the key while applying pressure to the wheel, or the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground.
