🚨 2015 Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 G-Class uses a traditional center console-mounted automatic transmission lever with an electronic shift lock that requires the brake pedal to be depressed.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) if battery power is available; if no power, proceed to override.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular slot with a removable cap located on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert the key or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shift lever from Park to Neutral without pressing the brake pedal.
  7. Keep your foot on the brake pedal once in Neutral (if power available) or ensure parking brake remains engaged.
  8. The vehicle can now be rolled or towed; for flatbed transport, ensure all wheels are on the deck.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. Remove the cap and use the override slot to release the shifter without any ignition position. The steering wheel will be locked, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed—it cannot be safely towed with wheels down as you cannot steer.
