The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter base, near where the lever meets the console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small cover cap
- Insert the key blade or a small flathead screwdriver firmly into the override slot
- While pressing down on the brake pedal (if electrical system has power) and holding the override depressed, move the shifter to neutral
- If no electrical power, press and hold the override while physically moving the shifter—it may require firm pressure

With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You do not need power to use it. Insert the tool into the override slot and apply firm downward pressure while moving the shifter to neutral. The steering lock will remain engaged, so the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed or dollies—do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground.
