⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake fully.
- Insert the key and turn to position II (ignition ON) if battery has any charge.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small covered slot or rectangular opening at the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side of the shifter near the P-R-N-D indicator.
- Remove the plastic cap or cover (it may pry off or slide out) to expose the override mechanism.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override pressed, press the brake pedal and push the shifter release button on the front of the lever, then move the shifter to Neutral.
- If resistance is felt, ensure the override is fully depressed and try rocking the steering wheel slightly to relieve pressure on the transmission park pawl.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or rear of the shifter housing under a small removable plastic cover.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock may not release even with the override on some W463 models due to electronic transmission range sensor. Jump-start the battery to at least accessory power before attempting the override. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels on the deck—do NOT attempt to tow with wheels down as the transfer case and transmission require lubrication from a running engine.
