⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot, which is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap to the left of the shifter base on the console.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the plastic cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power and override doesn't work alone, you may need to apply 12V power to the vehicle first via jump pack or jumper cables to energize the shift lock solenoid.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override may not function because the solenoid remains mechanically locked. Apply external 12V power via jump pack or jumper cables to energize the system, then use the override procedure. If this fails, the transmission must be placed in Neutral via the transmission itself (requires lifting vehicle and accessing transmission range selector - dealer/professional procedure).
