🚨 2018 Mercedes-Benz G550 W463: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 G550 W463 uses a traditional column-mounted automatic transmission selector with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake pedal switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a protective cap located on the left side of the steering column shroud, just below and behind the shift lever mounting point
  4. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the protective cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever from Park to Neutral
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Turn the key to position 1 manually to unlock the steering wheel. The override slot can be accessed and used without battery power. You may need to use the mechanical key to unlock the driver's door first if central locking is inoperative.
