🚨 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550 W463: Emergency Neutral

The 2019 G550 transitioned to the new W464 platform with a center console-mounted electronic selector lever and electronic parking brake.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply wheel chocks
  2. If battery power is available, turn the ignition to ON position using the start/stop button (press without brake pedal)
  3. Locate the shift lock override: on the center console, look for a small square or rectangular rubber cap directly to the left of the shift lever base, toward the driver's side
  4. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry out the rubber cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If successful, the transmission will be in Neutral and the vehicle can be rolled or loaded

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the electronic shift lock override may not function as the transmission control module needs minimal power. The 2019+ G-Class with electronic parking brake also cannot release the parking brake without power. Best practice with zero power: use a flatbed with dollies or wheel skates. Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground. If jump-starting is possible, even minimal power may allow the override to work.
