The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and properly chocked
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON or ACC position (engine does not need to run)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the button on the front of the shifter handle and move the lever to N
- If the shift interlock will not release with brake applied, locate the shift lock override slot
- The override is a small rectangular opening covered by a cap, located at the front-right base of the shifter assembly in the center console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move to N
- If there is NO 12V power at all, you must still use the override procedure - turn the key to position 1 mechanically to unlock the steering, then use the override slot to release the shifter to N

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Turn the key to position 1 to unlock the steering lock, then use the override slot with a screwdriver to manually release the shift lock mechanism and move to N. The mechanical override does not require electrical power.
