⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 (accessory) if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small covered opening on the right side of the shifter base on the center console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the small plastic cover cap.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or the removal tool from the vehicle toolkit into the override slot.
- While pressing down firmly on the override release, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no electrical power is available, maintain downward pressure on the override release while physically moving the shifter to Neutral—this may require firm force.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override will still function mechanically. Access the override slot as described, press down firmly with a tool, and manually move the shifter to Neutral. The steering lock will remain engaged, so the vehicle must be on a flatbed or dollies—do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground if steering is locked.
