⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- If battery power is available, turn the ignition to position 2 (ignition on) or press the start button without starting the engine.
- With power available: press and hold the brake pedal, then press the unlock button on top of the shifter and move it to Neutral.
- If the shift-lock is still engaged, locate the shift-lock override: look for a small covered slot near the base of the shifter on the console (typically right side or front).
- Remove the small plastic cover cap using a flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a small tool (screwdriver, key, or toolkit removal tool) into the override slot and press down.
- While maintaining pressure on the override, move the shifter to Neutral.
- If absolutely no electrical power is available, the override slot must be used—press down firmly with the tool and apply significant force to manually move the shifter to Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the W464's electronic shifter becomes more difficult to operate. The mechanical override will still function but may require significant force. Access the override slot, press down firmly, and manually force the shifter to Neutral. Be aware that the steering lock will remain engaged without power, requiring flatbed transport or dollies—never tow with wheels down when steering is locked.
