🚨 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 GL-Class (X164 generation, same as 2008) uses a traditional center console floor-mounted automatic transmission shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ACC or ON) if battery has any remaining charge
  3. Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small rectangular or circular cover on the left side of the shifter base where it meets the console trim
  4. Use the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the override cover cap
  5. Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override depressed and pressing the brake pedal (if power available), move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. If no power, maintain firm pressure on the override while moving the shifter—may require more force

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and will function without any electrical power. With a completely dead battery, insert your tool into the override slot and apply firm downward pressure while moving the shifter to neutral. The steering wheel lock will remain engaged, so the vehicle cannot be steered. The vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed—do not attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground as the transmission may not be fully released and steering is locked.
