🚨 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL: Emergency Neutral
The 2014 GL-Class (X166 generation) uses a floor-mounted electronic shift lever with electronic shift interlock on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly (pull up on electronic parking brake switch if any power available).
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery has any charge remaining - the push-button start vehicles will need battery power to access any ignition mode.
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small covered slot or access point at the base of the shifter, typically on the left side of the shifter housing near the front.
- Remove the small plastic cover using a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade.
- While firmly depressing the brake pedal (if power available), insert a small flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down or pull up (depending on design).
- While holding the override, move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
- The electronic parking brake may remain engaged - if the vehicle has no power, the EPB may prevent rolling and require flatbed transport.

With zero electrical power
With zero power on the X166 GL-Class, you face multiple challenges: the electronic parking brake (EPB) cannot be released without power, the shift interlock may not respond to the manual override, and the steering will be locked. Even if you successfully shift to Neutral, the EPB will likely prevent the vehicle from rolling. Flatbed transport is strongly recommended. Do NOT attempt to dolly-tow or flat-tow this vehicle.
