🚨 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 GLA (H247, second generation) uses a console-mounted electronic shift lever with a compact gate pattern that returns to center after shift inputs.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if it engages (may not work with dead battery).
- Turn the ignition to ON position if possible (press start button twice without pressing brake pedal to reach ON/accessory mode).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is typically found on the center console near the shifter base, covered by a small cap—on H247 models, check the right side or front of the shifter base.
- Use the emergency key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter toward the N position (typically one click rearward from P).
- The electronic lock should release and allow the shifter to move to neutral.
- Verify neutral is engaged by checking the instrument cluster display (if power is available).
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the center console shifter, typically on the right side or front—covered by a small removable cap. Exact position should be verified in owner's manual as H247 is newer generation.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the electronic shifter lock may not release even with the override mechanism, as the H247 uses fully electronic shift-by-wire. To move the vehicle: 1) Connect a jump pack or jumper cables to provide 12V power, 2) Turn ignition to ON mode (two presses of start button without brake), 3) Attempt override procedure. If no jump power is available, the vehicle CANNOT be shifted to neutral reliably—it must be loaded onto a flatbed with dollies under the front wheels or using a wheel-lift. Do NOT tow with any drive wheels on the ground. The 8-speed DCT has no accessible mechanical neutral release for roadside use.
