🚨 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA35 AMG: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 GLA35 AMG (H247 generation) uses a console-mounted electronic gear lever with shift-by-wire technology and electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the electric parking brake is engaged.
- If possible, turn the ignition to position 2 (ON) using the Start/Stop button without starting the engine (press without foot on brake).
- Locate the shift-lock override: on H247 GLA models, look for a small covered slot or release button near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front-right of the shifter housing.
- Remove the small plastic cover (may be a snap-fit cap or trim piece) to access the override mechanism.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key blade, or the emergency key into the override slot and press or pull the release mechanism (direction depends on design—try pressing down first, then pulling up if needed).
- While holding the override actuated, attempt to move the shifter to Neutral (N). On electronic shifters, you may need to press the brake pedal simultaneously if any power is available.
- If the shifter moves to N, hold it there momentarily; the transmission should mechanically disengage Park.
- Replace the override cover and verify the vehicle can roll in Neutral.
Shift-lock override location
The override mechanism is near the shifter base on the H247 generation, typically on the right or front-right side of the console housing under a small plastic cap; exact position may vary slightly by interior trim package.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter and transmission control module may not respond even with the mechanical override. Attempt to jump-start the 12V battery (located in the engine bay) to restore minimal power, then use the override procedure. If jump-starting is impossible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. Do NOT attempt to tow with front or rear wheels on the ground.
