🚨 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB35 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 GLB35 AMG uses a center console-mounted electronic shifter lever with a traditional PRND gate and electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/accessory position if battery power is available (press start button without brake pedal).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the center console—it is typically a small covered opening near the shifter base, often on the right side.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to remove the override cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to neutral.
  6. If successful, the shifter should release from Park and move to Neutral.
  7. If the electronic parking brake is engaged and non-functional with no power, locate the manual release (typically a pull-tab or cable near the driver's left footwell) and release it before towing.
  8. If moving to a flatbed, keep the shifter in Neutral and ensure the parking brake is released before loading.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic shifter will not function normally. The mechanical shift lock override is your only option—use the procedure above with the override slot. You will also need to manually release the electronic parking brake using the emergency release mechanism near the driver's footwell if it is engaged.
