🚨 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 GLC (X253) uses a center console-mounted electronic selector lever with P-R-N-D positions.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and wheel chocks are in place
  2. Locate the shift lock override access point: it's a small covered slot at the base of the shifter on the left side (driver's side)
  3. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to carefully pry off the small rectangular cover cap
  4. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the exposed slot and press down firmly
  5. While holding the override button depressed, press the brake pedal (if any 12V power exists) and move the shifter to N
  6. If no power exists, continue holding the override and rock the shifter forward to N position with moderate force
  7. Verify neutral by attempting to push the vehicle slightly

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V power, the electronic shifter release solenoid won't function. The override slot provides direct mechanical access to release the shift lock. You may need to apply moderate force while holding the override depressed. If the shifter absolutely won't move, the transmission park pawl may be under load; rock the vehicle slightly (on level ground) while attempting the override.
