🚨 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 X253: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 GLC300 X253 uses a traditional center console P-R-N-D electronic shifter lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (press START/STOP button twice without brake pedal).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the shift lock override button while pulling the shifter from P to N.
  5. If the shifter still will not move, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim.
  6. Remove the small plastic cover cap over the override slot using a flat tool.
  7. Insert a flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pulling the shifter to N.
  8. Once in N, the vehicle can be moved or towed.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function through normal means. You must use the mechanical shift lock override slot (remove cover cap on left side of shifter base, insert key or screwdriver, press down firmly while pulling shifter to N). If override does not work, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with wheels free-rolling or skates under the rear wheels.
