⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position (press START/STOP button twice without brake pedal).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shift lock override button while pulling the shifter from P to N.
- If the shifter will not release, locate the shift lock override access point - for console shifters, this is typically on the left side of the shifter base.
- Remove any small plastic cover cap over the override slot using a trim tool or flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward N.
- For column stalk shifters (if equipped), look for a small override release near the base of the stalk on the column.
- Once in N, the vehicle can be moved or towed.
Shift-lock override location
Console shifter: left side of shifter base under small cover cap. Column stalk (if equipped): near base of stalk on steering column
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic shifter requires mechanical override. Remove the cover cap over the shift lock override slot, insert a tool, and press down while moving shifter to N. If completely unsuccessful, vehicle must be loaded onto flatbed with all wheels free or using skates. Do not attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground.
