🚨 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 X253: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 GLC300 may be on the redesigned X254 platform (despite X253 in key) with updated electronic shifter, possibly column-mounted stalk or console lever depending on specification.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged.
  2. Attempt to activate ignition (press START/STOP twice without brake pedal to reach ON mode).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Attempt to shift normally to N - if shifter is locked, proceed to override.
  5. For console shifters: locate the shift lock override slot, typically on the left side of the shifter base, and remove the small cover cap.
  6. For column stalk shifters: look for override access near the base of the stalk where it meets the steering column.
  7. Insert a flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press firmly while moving the shifter to N.
  8. If using column stalk, push down on override while pulling stalk down to N position.
  9. Once in N, vehicle can be moved onto flatbed or pushed short distances.
Shift-lock override location
Varies by shifter type - console lever has override slot on left side of base; column stalk has override near column base. Check your specific vehicle configuration.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shifter override slot must be used. Remove protective cap, insert tool into override slot, press down while shifting to N. If mechanical override fails or cannot be located, vehicle must be loaded onto flatbed. Do not flat-tow with any wheels on ground.
