The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged.
- Attempt to activate ignition (press START/STOP twice without brake pedal to reach ON mode).
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Attempt to shift normally to N - if shifter is locked, proceed to override.
- For console shifters: locate the shift lock override slot, typically on the left side of the shifter base, and remove the small cover cap.
- For column stalk shifters: look for override access near the base of the stalk where it meets the steering column.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press firmly while moving the shifter to N.
