🚨 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 X254: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 GLC300 X254 hybrid uses a traditional PRND console-mounted lever shifter on the center console with electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly (or use wheel chocks if brake is inoperable).
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/Accessory position if any 12V power is available (press START button without brake pedal).
  3. Locate the shift-lock override cover: a small rectangular cap on the console directly to the LEFT of the shifter base.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the override cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while pulling the shifter toward you to move it to Neutral.
  6. If successful, the shifter will move to N; release the override and verify the gear indicator shows Neutral.
  7. The vehicle can now roll freely; ensure someone is in the driver's seat with foot on brake or use additional chocking.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override will still work mechanically. However, the transmission may not electronically engage Neutral. In this case, you must use the override slot while simultaneously attempting to turn the ignition to ON (using a jump pack or jumper cables temporarily). If absolutely no power is available and the override does not mechanically release the shifter, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground—do NOT tow with any wheels down.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a plug-in hybrid with electric drive components. If moving the vehicle with a dead high-voltage battery or in a crash/malfunction scenario, place the vehicle in TOW MODE if any 12V power is available (see owner's manual, typically accessed via infotainment or under-hood service menu). For complete electrical failure, use a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. NEVER tow with drive wheels on the ground unless in confirmed Neutral and tow mode is active—electric motor/transmission damage will occur.
