🚨 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE350 W166: Emergency Neutral
The W166 GLE uses a center console-mounted electronic selector lever (7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission) that requires electrical power and brake pedal input to shift.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 or 2 (ON) to provide power to the shifter electronics.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shifter lever rearward through the gate to position N (Neutral).
- If the brake-light switch has failed but you have battery power, locate the shift lock override slot on the center console near the shifter base.
- Remove the small rectangular cover cap directly forward and to the right of the shifter lever (between the shifter and the center console storage).
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or the emergency key into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter to N.
- If successful, release the override, confirm the dash displays N, and release the parking brake.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not release. You must jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source to the battery terminals to energize the shifter module. Once power is restored, follow the normal procedure or use the shift lock override if the brake switch is also failed. Do NOT attempt to force the shifter mechanically.
