⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is applied
- Attempt to turn ignition to ON position (press START button twice without brake pedal)
- If power is available, press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Push the shifter lever down (toward the rear) past Drive to engage Neutral
- If the shifter will not move due to failed shift interlock, locate the shift lock override
- Look for a small rectangular cover/cap directly adjacent to the shifter base on the console (typically on the left or front side of the shifter)
- Pry off the cover carefully with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a key or small screwdriver into the revealed slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, push the shifter lever to Neutral position
- Once in Neutral, release parking brake to allow vehicle to roll
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular access panel directly adjacent to the electronic shifter base on the center console, typically on the left or forward side of the shifter mechanism.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic shifter will not release from Park without external power. Connect a jump pack or jumper cables to provide minimal 12V power to the system. Even with jump power, if the shift interlock solenoid has failed, you will need to use the manual override slot. If absolutely no power can be provided, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels free (not winched while in Park, as this will damage the transmission).
