🚨 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE53 AMG W167: Emergency Neutral
The W167 GLE53 AMG uses a column-mounted electronic shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and wheels are chocked.
- Locate the shift-lock override access on the center console (if battery has residual power) or proceed to manual release.
- If the 12V battery has any charge: Insert the key fob in the cupholder slot (if equipped) or hold it against the start button, then press the brake pedal and start button to get accessory power.
- With accessory power, push the shifter stalk down to select Neutral (N).
- If there is absolutely no electrical power: The transmission must be mechanically released at the transmission itself under the vehicle.
- Access the underside of the vehicle (requires lift or ramps).
- Locate the transmission shifter cable connection point on the 9G-TRONIC transmission.
- There is a manual release lever or cable disconnect at the transmission - consult the emergency towing section of the owner's manual for the exact mechanical release point, as this requires specific knowledge of the transmission mounting location.
- Once released mechanically, the transmission will be in Neutral and the vehicle can roll freely.
Shift-lock override location
The W167 does not have a traditional console-mounted shift-lock override button; shift-lock release requires either battery power or mechanical transmission release underneath the vehicle.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter cannot be operated from inside the cabin. You must either jump-start the 12V battery to gain accessory power, or access the transmission from underneath to manually disconnect the shifter cable or use the mechanical neutral release at the transmission. This is NOT a DIY procedure for most owners - flatbed towing is strongly recommended.
