🚨 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE53 AMG W167: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 GLE53 AMG W167 uses a center console-mounted electronic gear selector lever with an integrated shift lock mechanism.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery allows) - if completely dead, proceed without power
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, covered by a small removable cap
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the plastic cap
  5. Press a small screwdriver, pen, or similar tool firmly into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to select Neutral
  6. Keep the tool depressed until the shifter engages in Neutral position
  7. If the vehicle has any battery power, verify Neutral is displayed on the instrument cluster
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the shifter base near the leather boot, under a small rectangular plastic cap approximately 15mm x 8mm
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override will still function mechanically - use the override slot as described above. You will not have instrument cluster confirmation of gear position. The steering may be locked; if moving the vehicle manually, be prepared for limited steering capability. Consider using a 12V jump pack on the battery terminals to temporarily power the vehicle systems for easier neutral engagement.
