⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Attempt to turn the ignition to position II (ON) - if battery is completely dead, proceed to override method
- Locate the shift lock override access point: remove the small rectangular cover panel on the right side of the shifter assembly near the base
- Insert a small flat tool (screwdriver, key blade) into the override slot beneath the cover
- With the tool inserted and pressed down, simultaneously move the shifter to Neutral position
- Hold the override depressed until the transmission fully engages Neutral
- If any battery voltage exists, verify Neutral indication on the instrument cluster
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the shifter base assembly, accessed by removing a small rectangular plastic cover approximately 20mm x 10mm located near the leather boot
With zero electrical power
With complete battery failure, the mechanical shift lock override will still function. After removing the cover and pressing the override, the shifter will release mechanically. You will have no electronic confirmation of gear position and the steering lock may be engaged. Consider jump-starting the vehicle temporarily or using a portable battery pack connected to the battery terminals to restore minimal power for safer neutral engagement and steering unlock.
