🚨 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 X204: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 GLK350 X204 uses a traditional center console automatic transmission lever with a shift-lock button on the side of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery has sufficient power.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap directly forward of the shifter base on the center console, between the shifter and the center console trim.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cover cap.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If no brake pressure is available, continue holding the override down and move the shifter directly to Neutral—the override mechanically releases the shift lock.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you cannot turn the ignition to any position. The shift-lock override is purely mechanical—insert the tool into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter to Neutral. No electrical power is required for the override itself, but steering and brakes will not function, so the vehicle must be winched or dollied onto a flatbed.
