The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if battery has sufficient power.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap directly forward of the shifter base on the center console, between the shifter and the center console trim.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no brake pressure is available, continue holding the override down and move the shifter directly to Neutral—the override mechanically releases the shift lock.
