🚨 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 GLS (X166 generation) uses a traditional center console automatic transmission lever with electronic shift-lock controlled by the brake-light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 2 (ON) if battery has sufficient power—this energizes the shift-lock system.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override access: look for a small covered slot or panel on the center console directly adjacent to or forward of the shifter base—typically on the right side or forward edge of the shifter surround.
  4. Remove the cover cap using a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade.
  5. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly to mechanically release the shift lock.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If the brake pedal is not functioning, maintain pressure on the override and move the shifter to Neutral—the mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot located on the center console near the shifter base—typically on the right side or forward of the shifter surround. Exact location may vary slightly by trim; consult owner's manual or inspect console closely around shifter base for a small removable cap.
With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the ignition cannot be turned on and electronic systems are inoperative. The mechanical shift-lock override still functions—access the override slot, press down with a tool, and move the shifter to Neutral. Steering will be locked and brakes will not assist, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with a winch or dollies.
