The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to position 2 (ON) if battery has sufficient power—this energizes the shift-lock system.
- Locate the shift-lock override access: look for a small covered slot or panel on the center console directly adjacent to or forward of the shifter base—typically on the right side or forward edge of the shifter surround.
- Remove the cover cap using a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade.
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly to mechanically release the shift lock.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the brake pedal is not functioning, maintain pressure on the override and move the shifter to Neutral—the mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock.

With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the ignition cannot be turned on and electronic systems are inoperative.
