🚨 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS450 X167: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 GLS450 X167 uses a modern center console automatic transmission lever with electronic shift-by-wire and shift-lock controlled by brake and ignition status.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition on (push START button without pressing brake) to position 2 (ON) if the 12V battery has any remaining charge—this may enable the shift-lock system.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override: on X167 models, look for a small rectangular cover or access panel on the center console immediately adjacent to the shifter base—typically on the right side or forward of the shifter.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal emergency key blade to carefully pry off the override cover.
  5. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly to mechanically disengage the shift lock.
  6. While holding the override depressed, move the shifter to Neutral.
  7. If ignition cannot be powered on, the mechanical override will still release the shifter—continue to hold override and move to Neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular access panel or slot on the center console near the shifter base, typically to the right or forward of the shifter. Inspect the console trim closely around the shifter for a small removable cap or panel.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the ignition cannot be activated and the electronic shifter may not respond normally. Use the mechanical shift-lock override to release the shifter into Neutral. Be aware that with no power, the steering column will be locked, the electronic parking brake may remain engaged (requiring a separate 12V jump to release), and brake assist will be unavailable. The vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed—do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground.
