🚨 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS580 X167: Emergency Neutral

The 2020 GLS580 X167 uses a column-mounted electronic shifter stalk on the right side of the steering column.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button without brake pedal) to energize the shifter electronics.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Move the shifter stalk down to position D, then press the button on the end of the stalk and pull toward you to engage Neutral.
  5. If the shifter remains locked and will not move, locate the shift lock override access—typically a small cover or slot near the base of the steering column shroud on the right side.
  6. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to press the override release while attempting to shift to Neutral.
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the steering column shroud on the right side, usually accessed via a small cover that can be pried off; exact location may vary—consult owner's manual if accessible
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function at all. You must use the shift lock override mechanism (small slot near column shroud base) with the mechanical key or screwdriver to manually release the shifter into Neutral. If this fails, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground or dollies used on the rear wheels.
