⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition to position II (ON) if battery power is available; if not, see No Power Notes below.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover on the center console, positioned directly to the left of the gear selector base.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim removal tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or a similar thin tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the button on the front of the shift lever and move the lever to the Neutral position.
- The transmission will engage Neutral if electrical power is present.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V power, the electronic transmission control unit cannot command the transmission into Neutral, even with the shift lock override. The override only releases the mechanical lock on the shifter itself. You must restore 12V power via jump-starting or connecting an auxiliary battery to the jump-start terminals (under the hood) before the transmission can electronically shift. If power cannot be restored, the vehicle requires flatbed towing with all four wheels off the ground due to the AWD system.
