🚨 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLS63 AMG: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 GLS63 AMG uses a traditional P-R-N-D electronic console shifter located on the center console with a locking button on the side of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if you have any battery power (press Start button without brake pedal).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the button on the side of the shifter handle and move the shifter to N.
  5. If the shifter will not release from P, locate the shift lock override slot on the center console near the shifter base.
  6. Remove the small rubber cap or trim piece covering the override slot (typically located on the right side or front of the shifter base).
  7. Insert a flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and push down while pressing the shifter button and attempting to move to N.
  8. Once in N, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap-covered slot on the center console near the shifter base, typically on the right side or forward of the shifter; exact position may require inspecting the trim around the shifter
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter may not release even with the override. Mercedes-Benz recommends jump-starting the vehicle minimally (enough to activate electronics) before attempting to shift. If jump-start is impossible, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground or dolly the rear wheels.
