🚨 2004 Mercedes-Benz ML: Emergency Neutral
The 2004 ML-Class (W163) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and engage the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition key to position 2 (ON) if the battery has any charge remaining.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release due to dead battery or failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override release.
- On the W163 ML, look for a small rectangular cap or access cover on the shifter console trim, typically located to the left or in front of the shifter base.
- Remove the cap using a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingers.
- Insert a screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If completely dead with no power, and the manual override does not work, the shifter cable at the transmission (accessed from underneath) must be manually manipulated to achieve neutral.

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the shift interlock solenoid may remain engaged. The manual override typically works mechanically, but if it fails, you must disconnect or manipulate the shift cable at the transmission (underneath the vehicle). A jump-start is the preferred method.
