🚨 2005 Mercedes-Benz ML: Emergency Neutral
The 2005 ML-Class (W163 early production, W164 late production) uses a floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock; W164 introduced mid-2005 has a redesigned shifter.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and engage the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition key to position 2 (ON) if the battery has any charge remaining.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release, locate the shift lock override release on the shifter console.
- For W163 (early 2005): Look for a small rectangular cap on the shifter console trim, typically to the left or forward of the shifter base. Remove the cap and insert a tool into the slot, pressing down while shifting to Neutral.
- For W164 (late 2005 onward): The override is typically a small covered slot on the right side or front of the shifter base housing. Remove the cap, insert a screwdriver or key, press down, and shift to Neutral.
- If the manual override does not work with no power, access to the transmission range selector linkage underneath the vehicle is required.
- Once in Neutral, release the parking brake only when ready to move the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift interlock solenoid remains locked. The mechanical override usually works, but if it does not, the shift cable or transmission selector must be manually manipulated from underneath the vehicle. Jump-starting the battery is strongly recommended.
